Fiesta Under the Palapa

There is something completely magical about summer evenings when the heat gently breaks, the pool glows aquamarine, and the call of a festive gathering brings everyone together. Recently, we decided to transport our guests straight to a tropical paradise with a vibrant Mexican fiesta right in our own backyard. Held entirely under the thatched roof of our poolside palapa, it was a night defined by bold colors, rich textures, fresh citrus accents, and effortless outdoor entertainment.

When planning the layout, the goal was an absolute explosion of color that instantly established a celebratory, joyful mood. The rustic, tropical framework of the palapa provided the perfect canopy for hanging layers of authentic papel picado banners.

Swirling in bright fuchsia, lime green, electric blue, and sun yellow, these intricate laser-cut banners danced in the evening breeze, immediately drawing the eye upward and setting a whimsical, high-energy tone the moment guests stepped into the space. I hung them on my upside down table rod.

I anchored the long table with handwoven Mexican serape runners running down the length and across the seating areas. The bold, multi-colored stripes provided an energetic backdrop for the place settings. To bring in a grounding, organic element, each setting featured a thick, natural woven placemat fringed with multi-colored fibers that perfectly mimicked the playful texture of the runners.

To keep the visual energy high, I used a mix of vibrant, solid-colored dinnerware in rich terracotta orange, deep swirl reds, and bright chartreuse green. The glassware was a personal favorite element—heavy, hand-blown goblets with beautiful amber, yellow, and tortoiseshell flecks that caught the poolside sunlight beautifully. For flatware, I chose playful, rainbow-striped handles to tie the entire look together. Miniature maracas were tucked between the fruit displays, offering a whimsical nod to the theme and giving guests a fun, interactive element to play with as the night progressed. I also placed one maracas on each plate.

For our dining pleasure, we served a buffet of Beef Short Ribs Enchiladas. Spanish Rice. Beans, Chalupas and Chicken Fajitas with Sangria. Plus chips, salsa and quacamole.

Flan and Tres Leche was the desserts.  I like making individual desserts.

The centerpiece is this lovely cactus arrangement.

While the table setting brought the color, the real showstopper of the patio was our outdoor hutch. My talented husband actually built this beautiful piece for our space, and it has become my favorite canvas for seasonal decorating!

For the fiesta, I went full maximalist, transforming it into a vibrant Mexican-themed display station. I layered the shelves with rows of bright papel picado fringe across the counter edge, flanked by matching white decorative lanterns and whimsical blue glass accents. Up top, we framed it with a canopy of colorful banners and a garland of bright oranges and greenery.

Imagine the scent of sizzling chicken fajitas, chalupas, beef short rib enchiladas and more of  the refreshing taste of sangria and without leaving your backyard. That's exactly what we achieved with our recent Mexican dinner party.
