Living Without Power- The New Norm?

Hello friends, it is amazing how we all depend on power.  Flip the switch and we have light.  My husband used to explain how electricity works and I would roll my eyes.  I have no interest in how it works, I just want it to turn on and off.

We are definitely being tested lately.  Three times PG&E have turned off the power.  They just turned the power on this afternoon and now they are saying they are turning it off later tonight. We live out in the country, therefore we have a well.  No power, no water!

This all has come about due to the Big fire in Paradise last year.  PG&E was found responsible and was sued and held liable and are in bankruptcy.

We do not have a generator.  We are in the process of getting one, however the demand is huge, so we are on a waiting list.  We do have several appointments.

Meanwhile, we are making the best of it.  Battery lanterns, filling up the tub and using buckets.  Thank goodness we have a gas fireplace and gas stove.

We charge up our phone and iPads.  Our neighbor is gracious to let us charge up when the charge is zero. You feel stupid when you try to turn the switch.

Our local town does have power, so we went out for Chinese Food. When we returned the power was on, so we turned on the laundry, the dishwasher and filled up on water and also charged everything in sight.
It feels like us...lo

I threw away over $300.00 worth of food today.  My freezer and fridge are empty. No sense going grocery shopping if I have to throw it all away.

One of our battery lanterns we use.  We also have little miner head lights that go on our head. I am turning into a vampire with all of this dark.  See my stylish head gear.
I shall post when I can.   Sorry it is difficult to visit everyone. I am sneaking this post in while we have some power.  We are safe, nowhere near the fires.  I feel for so many who have lost their homes and are also enduring hardships.  We do not smell the smoke here.  Take care.

  2. We have heard about that in the news....so sorry yall are having to experience that. Hope your
weather is cool. We have to go thru that many times in the heat of summer when their are hurricanes
or tropical storms......definitely not a fun time. Course, the worst for me is the heat....but at
least we do have water too, just not hot water...but as hot as it is you really don't won't a hot
shower for sure. Praying they get those wild fires under control soon. Hang in there hon.
    Blessings, Nellie

  6. I am so sorry, Linda. This totally interrupts life for sure and I take electricity and water for granted. Hopefully, this will soon be over for you!

  7. Like the old saying goes "You don't miss the water til the well runs dry" -- or electricity until it gets shut off! Hang in there and let's hope the crisis is over soon.

  8. Those fires are horrible. Glad you are staying safe even with the inconvenience of no power. I want to say I saw on FB some kind of light bulb that works when the power goes out. That might be something to look into for your lamps. You guys are having fires we are getting snow. What is Happening?!!!!!
    Hugs,
    Kris

  9. Boy what a struggle. We lost power several years ago and bought a generator because we didn’t know how long it would be before we got it back. We haven’t used it since but it’s comforting to know we have it on hand. We have a well too so we are relegated to having buckets of water on hand too. Boy I hope this season of the winds ends soon!

  10. We lost power for eight days during a hurricane several years ago and it was horrible, but it was unavoidable and caused by Mother Nature and once it was on it was on. What you’re dealing with is unbelievable. There’s got to be a better way and how nerve wracking to never know when you’ll lose it again. I hope they get these fires and this situation under control soon!

  11. How frustrating, however if it prevents fires in your area, I guess it is worth it. It is so sad to see all of the destruction from the fires. Hang in there - BTW, you make a pretty good lookin' vampire

  12. I am so sorry you are going through this right now Linda. I am glad you are safe from the fires though and I do hope that this situation does not go on for a long time for you. At least you have your sense of humor in all of this and look so cute with the stylish head gear.

  13. I am so sorry, Linda. We have experienced no power when there were storms and I feel your pain. We do have a small generator now that operates with gasoline for emergencies. Thankful for your gas stove and fireplace.
I hope things improve quickly. We are all very spoiled to all the comforts of electricity.

  15. Well, you will love having a generator when you get it. We put in a full house generator when we built this house and it is amazing. WE've never been out for very long yet but I'm sure we will be at some point. Hope y'all get your power back once and for all.

  16. Hey my sweet friend, we feel your pain. Our power came on around 3:00 today but may well be cut again on Wednesday. Insane. Annoying. Disruptive and only in Cali. 😕

  17. A true test of patience. I have a sister-in-law and brother-in-law who live on a mountain just outside city limits with a cistern. They installed a gas line and whole house generator when their pump went out for a week one year at Christmastime. Your situation is really scary, Linda. I hope you guys weather the storm - literally and figuratively.

  18. How awful, and to have it come off and on without much notice, I am thinking of you all the time, at least you're not having to evacuate! Tough stuff, I freak when the power goes off!!
    Love your headlamp!
