Hello friends, time for another Tales of The Traveling Tote and a Giveaway. Details on the giveaway are at the bottom of this post.
Paul and I haven't really traveled, so this post will be rather centered around our visit to Colfax, California. We have travel plans later this year.
Paul and I visited the little town of Colfax. There’s something so special about these historic railroad towns. Spent the morning wandering down Main Street, waiting for the trains to pass through the heart of town, and soaking up that fresh Sierra air. If you’re looking for a peaceful pitstop on your way to Tahoe (or a destination all its own), Colfax is it.
Colfax Heritage Museum
Colfax, California, is a historic "railroad town" in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Today, it remains a key stop for long-distance travelers crossing the mountains.
The primary train service that stops in Colfax is Amtrak’s California Zephyr.
The Colfax Station
The station itself is a point of pride for the town.
Location: 99 Railroad Street.
The Building: The station is a historic wooden depot built in 1905. It is unstaffed, but it houses the Colfax Heritage Museum, which is open to visitors during the day.
Unique Feature: The station has a "movable" platform edge. Because Union Pacific operates massive rotary snowplows on these tracks during winter, the platform is designed so it won't be damaged by the wide plow blades
Schuyler Colfax statue stands notably in Colfax, California, honoring the town's namesake (a bronze statue erected in 2003) and a prominent monument by Lorado Taft in Indianapolis, Indiana, commemorating the former VP and House Speaker, with detailed depictions of him in a coat, holding papers, and on a pedestal with IOOF emblems.
We browsed around the small town and headed into the Wrecking Crew Bakery for a pastry.
Colfax isn’t just a stop on the I-80; it’s the gateway to some of the most stunning river views in Northern California.
That's all folks, nothing too exciting here. I hope you visit the other Traveling Tote gals to see where their travels took them. To get a chance of winning this Mackenzie Child's eyeglass case, leave a comment on Debbie's blog- Mountain Breaths

ReplyDeleteI do love seeing the old railroad towns. This one in Colfax brings back memories of watching the "Hell On Wheels" series about the transcontinental construction of the Union Pacific. Great history!
ReplyDeleteLinda, such a lovely small town to visit and explore. So much history here with equally interesting information about the town. Jim would be in heaven here with the railroad. I find it so interesting how the platform was designed to be moveable so as not to be damaged by passing trains with large equipment. The bakery looks cozy and inviting for a break and a little tasty treat. Thanks for taking us along. I'm wondering if we may have gone through this town when we were in CA. Happy New Year Linda and Paul.....

ReplyDeleteLinda, the trip to Colfax looks interesting and fun. I love exploring new small towns, especially those with a bit of history. Monnie and I took the Skunk Train from Fort Bragg up through the red wood forests. We road in an open air car and it was magnificent. Have you taken this trip? I think you and Paul would enjoy it. Happy New Year and all the best in 2026!
