There is something deeply nostalgic about the cardinal in winter. Against a backdrop of crisp white snow and deep forest greens, that flash of crimson feels like a symbol of hope and warmth. This year, I decided to lean into that classic imagery, blending rich textures and "old-world" elegance with some modern, high-tech lighting to create a table that feels both cozy and sophisticated.
To set a moody, luxurious tone, I bypassed the standard linen and went straight for a rich green velvet tablecloth. It provides a heavy, lustrous base that makes every other color pop.
For the runner, I layered textures: a snowy white base runner topped with a vibrant red poinsettia runner. This layering creates a beautiful "grounding" effect for the centerpiece while echoing the colors of the season.
I love a table that invites guests to touch and explore. My goal was to mix organic shapes with festive patterns:
The Base: I started with red charger plates set atop snow-covered cedar placemats for an earthy, woodland feel. The Plates: The stars of the show are the Certified International Susan Winget cardinal dinner plates. To add a bit of whimsical "garden" flair, I layered them with Bordallo Pinheiro cabbage salad plates—the green of the ceramic perfectly complements the velvet cloth.
The Details: I tucked in cardinal-themed napkins to tie the bird motif together, paired with red and gold goblets for a touch of regal shine.
The focal point of the table is a showstopper from Glam Fleur. I chose the Noir Grand Collection, which features a round box filled with deep, gorgeous red preserved roses. Because they are preserved, they maintain that "just-picked" velvet texture throughout the entire season.
I flanked the roses with two large red cardinals perched in small wreaths, bringing the theme of the plates into the 3D space of the table.
Whimsy in Motion: The Finishing Touches to truly bring the winter wonderland theme to life, I tucked two cardinal snow globes into the landscape. They echo the Susan Winget plates beautifully and add a sense of nostalgia. There is something so enchanting about the way the "snow" swirls inside the globes, catching the glow from the wine bottle lamps and reflecting the deep red of the Glam Fleur roses.
Lighting is what transforms a dinner into an event. Instead of traditional tapers, I opted for a mix of cordless, rechargeable options to keep the table clutter-free.
The Lamps: I used two Green Leonora lacquer rechargeable lamps from Mrs. Alice, topped with festive red and white striped shades.
The Bottles: I also repurposed a few favorite bottles, such as RumChata using USB-C rechargeable cork lights, turning wine bottles into luminous décor pieces. RumChata Peppermint Bark is a cream liquor blending Caribbean rum, real dairy cream, vanilla, cinnamon and peppermint.
Wine Bottle LED Lamp
If you are interested in the bottle lamps, I have included the links to Amazon.
You can turn any bottle into a table lamp, without the wiring. It is USB charged. The lamps come in different colors too.
*As an Amazon affiliate, if you purchase the above lamps, I may make a small commission at no extra cost to you.
The Coffee Service: To end the night, I’ve set out Charter Club Fashion Buffet gold mugs from Macy’s, which catch the LED light beautifully.
Facts About Cardinals
Messengers of the Heart: Many people believe that "when a cardinal appears, an angel is near." Seeing a red cardinal is often interpreted as a sign that a loved one who has passed is visiting or watching over you.
The "Christmas Bird": Because they don't migrate, their vibrant red feathers provide a stunning contrast against white snow and evergreen trees, making them the unofficial mascot of winter hope and vitality.
Named for Royalty: Early European settlers named them "Cardinals" because the male's bright red plumage reminded them of the crimson robes worn by Catholic Cardinals.

ReplyDeleteWhat memories this entire sublime table setting engenders---both bright joys of Christmas, and the poignant memory of a small boy who visited us one January decades ago--I would never have known him except that my Sister caught his cousin's eye at a dance club in Denver when we were visiting family, and set up a correspondence which led to their marriage. So the little fellow visited us when he was about three, when our Mississippi home was surrounded in an unusual snow that lasted a couple of weeks.
ReplyDeleteWe'd go out and play a while, then come back in to watch the flock of cardinals which lived in the huge yew hedge out the kitchen window---I remember his warm little body as I held him at the window, one foot in each side of the kitchen sink, alert and so entertained and awed by that great number of the red flashes on the green. His quicksilver little personality and easy delight with such a display was something I'll never forget.
We were never to see the little fellow again, for he was taken from us in an accident that next year, and such is the legend and lore of a Cardinal---Any glimpse of the red birds, on a card or a screen or the active nests they've made outside our windows here so many miles from any of the other events---and I see his sweet, eager face and feel the excitement of that day I was privileged to show such a grand event to that little guy. Wonderful, meaningful memories in my heart.
