Bringing the Woods to Your Table

As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, there's no better time to bring the magic of the forest indoors. This year, I wanted to create a fall tablescape that captures the whimsical spirit of the season with a touch of faerie enchantment. Inspired by the beautiful artwork of Amy Brown, this tablescape transforms a simple dining table into a mystical woodland, perfect for a cozy dinner or a special fall gathering.

Sometimes we all need a little magic.

Amy Brown has been painting faeries for more than 25 years.  She started painting Faeries in 1992. She was always been interested in them, but had never considered them to be a career option, until one day when she was not quite twenty-one and working in a small art gallery. Her boss asked her to paint something to fill an empty frame that had been sitting around. She asked her what I should paint and she said "I don't know, paint a Faerie or something." So she did. Three days later, the piece sold. So she painted another. It sold. And she painted another. It sold too. You get the picture. She began painting Faeries whenever she had spare time. Rapidly she became more and more drawn to painting them. They demanded it. The years shoved their way past her and she kept her head down; painting, painting, painting and not paying much attention to the rest of the world unless she absolutely had to. It was like the Faeries had taken control of her and were pushing her to paint their portraits and perhaps to let the world know they are watching.

The Foundation: A Log and Moss

The heart of this tablescape is a real log my husband found, which serves as the centerpiece. Paul drilled a few holes into the top, creating the perfect spots for some charming mushroom-shaped candles I picked up from Michaels. The flickering candlelight from these mushrooms casts a warm, magical glow, making the whole scene feel alive.

Faeries love using the natural elements such as mushrooms for umbrellas. Fancy petals can make a darling outfit. Faeries are friends with butterflies, frogs, lady bugs and more.

To complete the woodland floor, I used preserved moss to trail along the log and fill in the gaps. The vibrant green of the moss contrasts beautifully with the rustic bark of the log, creating a lush, organic feel that feels like you've stumbled upon a secret faerie glade.

To complement the rich, natural colors of the tablescape, I chose bronze flatware by Gracious Goods. The warm metallic tone of the flatware ties in perfectly with the fall theme and adds a hint of elegance. For a final pop of color, I used beautiful amber-colored goblets. The light catches the glass, making the whole table shimmer with warmth.

And what would a faerie glen be without its inhabitants? I've placed delightful faeries on each side of the log, as if they are guarding the centerpiece and welcoming guests to their forest home.

Setting the Scene with Spode and Amy Brown

When it came to the place settings, I knew I wanted to layer textures and colors to create a truly magical effect. I started with  green placemats with leaves and added real wood slices as chargers, which immediately brought an earthy, natural element to each seat.

On top of the chargers, I used my beautiful Woodland Spode dinnerware, which features classic autumnal scenes of acorns, leaves, and various animals. The real showstopper, however, are the Amy Brown faerie plates layered on top. The salad plates feature an enchanting faerie, adding a touch of fantasy and personality to the table.

A larger faerie holding a butterfly is sitting on my Chris Madden cake stand with a wood slice. I am displaying cupcakes with fairy toppers to go with the theme.

The Final, Enchanting Details

To add even more drama and height to the scene, I placed two tall wood logs standing upright plus wood slices and placed my faerie houses on each piece of wood.. I added fairy lights to each one, so they would light up for an evening look.  I then added moss and a few faeries, plus accessories.
To ensure the faeries can easily move about, I crafted a tiny faerie ladder from small branches and twine from our own yard, providing a whimsical way for them to get to and from their houses.
Sweet little faeries add to the whimsy of  this enchanted look.
This faerie tablescape is more than just a table setting; it's an invitation to a magical fall evening, an immersive experience where every detail whispers of enchantment. It’s a reminder that even in the coziest corners of our homes, a little bit of nature's magic can be found, especially when sprinkled with a generous dash of imagination and, of course, a little pixie dust. I hope this inspires you to create your own enchanted space this season!

How about a pumpkin faery house with a cobblestone path.  A sweet bunny is waiting for one of it's faerie friends.  Below is a video I created.

  1. Oh, WOW! This is truly amazing—a work of art! I absolutely love it! I can't imagine how much time you put into it, and what a joy to see it all and watch the beautiful video, too! As I looked at all the photos, I kept thinking of "Lord of the Rings" and the Hobbits for some reason. It just reminds me of where they would live! Along with the faeries, of course! It was such a genius idea to use a real log and the wooden chargers. It is all so enchanting, as you said, and very charming. Thank you for sharing, sweet friend. God bless you this autumn!
