National Donut Day

Hello everyone, today is National Doughnut Day.  It's a good excuse to eat a donut. There's alot of history about how this day started.
National Doughnut Day is on the first Friday of June each year, succeeding the Doughnut Day event created by The Salvation Army in 1938 to honor the women who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I. The holiday celebrates the doughnut (a.k.a. "donut") — an edible, torus-shaped piece of dough which is deep-fried and sweetened. Many American doughnut stores offer free doughnuts on National Doughnut Day. In 2009, both independent doughnut shops and large national franchises offered free doughnuts in the United States.
The Salvation Army's "doughnut lassies" continued that service during World War II and cemented the doughnut's place in the American diet.
If you want to try duplicate the doughnut lassie's work in your kitchen today.

If you are not in the mood to celebrate National Doughnut Day in the kitchen, try heading down to your local Krispy Kreme or Dunkin Donuts.

Krispy Kreme is offering a FREE donut to all customers at participating locations.

At participating Dunkin Donuts, customers will get a FREE doughnut with the purchase of a beverage.

Here's a recipe for Krispy Kreme Doughnuts:

Directions:
Mix together ingredients for glaze.  Melt butter in hot milk, add 1 tsp. sugar and salt.  Allow to cool.
Beat in yeast, nutmeg, eggs, remaining sugar, and 3 cups flour.
Add rest of flour (dough will be sticky).
Knead for 5 minutes, then allow to rise for 1 - 1 1/2 hours.
Roll out dough, cut into shapes.
Do not re-roll dough,  then allow to rise for 30-45 minutes.
Heat oil to 365 degrees and fry 1-2 minutes on each side until brown.
Toss  in doughnuts holes first, let those cook, and then proceed to
cooking doughnuts.
let them cool on a paper towel - helps get the glaze to stick.
Dip in warm glaze
Enjoy!

  6. Hi Linda, my husband took my son to Dunkin Donuts this morning. When they came home my son told me that he got a free donut. I didn't realize there was a real reason behind this. Now I get it! If I had known maybe I would have gone along....: )

  7. I love doughnuts, but have never made any homemade. They look like too much work! I would happily stop at Krispy Kreme or Dunkin Doughnuts though. It was fun reading the history about them.

  11. Linda, my daughter and I tried to make jelly-filled donuts at the lake on Saturday for National Donut Day, and it was a freakin' total disaster!!! An Epic. Failure. But we did not let it ruin our weekend, LOL! Cute post, and maybe we would have had better luck with your Krispy Kreme recipe!
