Algae- Be Gone!

Recently I had a dinner party and I was talking to one of my neighbors about the algae in our bird bath and fountains.  She told me a great tip!  Some of you might know this already, but it's news to me.
We have many fountains around our property and numerous bird baths.  One bird bath is particular is so pretty and such a focal point, I was finding my self constantly cleaning it out, because of the algae.

My neighbor told me about copper pennies or copper pipe.
Drop some in and your algae problem will be under control.  It works!

The fountain off our Breakfast room.
Copper has been used before the Roman Empire to help keep water clean. No time to get into the technical babble, but  it works and you need several 1964 and older pennies. A section of copper pipe works better, you just pick it up when cleaning.  It will not hurt the birds.

This view is our Fish fountain.  There is a large deep Koi pond on the other side.
Our urn fountain on the side of our house.
      The fountain off our study.
This is our pool...We have a large waterfall and 2 smaller ones.

Your visits brighten my day....Thank you as always.

  1. I did not know that. Great tip. We had a wall fountain on our back porch a few years ago and I was constantly having to clean it. We tried the special algae clear stuff made for fountains, but it bubbled up! Not good.

  2. What a great tip, Linda! I don't use germicide in case my cats or the birds drink from the fountain and algae is a big problem. ~ Maureen

  6. Hi Linda! Thanks for the great tip! Now I will be searching for 1964 or older pennies, so it won't work with newer pennies? Thanks for sharing your beautiful photos! Gina

  12. I knew the tip. It's one of those wife tales that pass through generations in my family. Since we had several water deposits for the animals in the country someone must have found about it, by accident I believe, and it's been passed along.

Your home is lovely, lovely and the presence of water is striking and so soothing. Well done!!!

Wishing you a nice and cool weekend,
    Teresa
